BroadSoft has signed an agreement to acquire Casabi, a privately held company, for $1.95 million. BroadSoft provides software to both wired and wireless services providers to deliver voice and multimedia services over their IP-based networks. Casabi provides cloud-based personalized content and messaging applications.

Among the products that Casabi will add to the BroadSoft portfolio are “fixed-line SMS, customized information services, and tools that keep families organized,” according to the company. Using the Casabi hosted application, users can send “group text messages to any phone number (fixed-line or mobile), access voice mail, make real-time updates to a family calendar, and share a network address book.”
CEO Michael Tessler commented on his company’s motivation behind the deal in a statement, saying, “We will help operators improve customer retention by delivering new innovative services to the home. We also expect to leverage the Casabi technology to further serve the communication needs of the small business market.”
Comcast, an existing Casabi customer and longstanding and BroadSoft customer, is excited about the acquisition, according to Cathy Avgiris, Comcast Cable’s senior vice president and general manager of Comcast Communications and Data Services.
“Comcast has worked closely with Casabi to develop and deliver consumer-friendly communication and information features that create a richer, more compelling experience for our Xfinity customers,” Avgiris said.
Commenting on the agreement, Joe McGarvey, principal analyst for IP Infrastructure at Current Analysis, said, “Though not yet official, BroadSoft’s acquisition of Casabi will eventually be beneficial to the hosted PBX equipment maker. In addition to augmenting the BroadWorks platform with consumer-friendly applications that are new to the platform, the modestly priced acquisition will increase the popularity of the BroadSoft platform to the company’s burgeoning developer community, which is always looking to integrate network functions into Web-based applications.”
