Webtorials contributors have been busy in the last week — posting a “triple play” of useful resources including some practical tips on VoIP troubleshooting, some analysis on integrating video with unified communications, and an online edition of “Unified Communications for Dummies”.
“Troubleshooting Your VoIP Ecosystem” is a white paper written by Integrated Research and sponsored by Prognosis. The paper looks at VoIP call quality issues including those experienced within the network, within the VoIP application and within devices. The research aims to help VoIP stakeholders troubleshoot issues from a telephony perspective within the overall data network. A better understanding and approach to manage troubleshooting can deliver a better ROI in deploying and managing a high-quality VoIP service. The white paper can be found here.

The second resource, “Bringing Unified Communications to Life with Seamless Video Interoperability” was written by E. Brent Kelly at Wainhouse Research and sponsored by Avaya. The paper explains the critical nature of integrating video conferencing and UC. While video conferencing has been around decades, this research suggests that we are on the brink of video conferencing becoming a staple of the corporate communications diet. Fueled by the convergence of HD-quality availability, plummeting bandwidth prices, pressure to reduce travel expenses and acceptance of virtual experiences by a new generation workforce, it seems that this capability will finally be ready for prime time. The paper concludes that it needs to be as easy to hold a video conference as it is to make a phone call or to send an e-mail. This resource can be found here.
Third on our list of recommended reading is “Unified Communications for Dummies”, a 51-page e-book written by Lawrence Miller and sponsored as an Avaya Second Custom Edition. The book provides an overview of UC: what it is; what capabilities and benefits it can provide companies; and how to implement it successfully. It positions UC as an innovative solution that can help businesses reduce costs, increase productivity, and improve customer satisfaction and loyalty. UC also empowers an increasingly mobile workforce in a virtual workplace, allowing large companies and enterprises to achieve their business objectives (and much more) from virtually anywhere. The book can be downloaded here.
Our thanks to the sponsors and authors on these valuable resources — and to Webtorials for sharing them free to our readers.
Special note: we had planned to use this newsletter edition to discuss net neutrality, but thought these resources might make for some great end-of-summer reading. We’ll be back soon with some analysis on recent net neutrality news.
