15 student projects vie for prizes to be shown via live streaming by Google on YouTube
UPDATE 2: Not to be upstaged, Microsoft also this week revealed winners of its 9th annual Imagine Cup, which the company describes as the “world’s premier student technology competition.”
UPDATE 1: The top 3 Google Science Fair winners — all girls — were recognized for innovations in areas such ovarian cancer research and lung health as well as making grilled chicken safer to eat.
Google tonight will stream live tonight at 7pm PDT on YouTube the finals of the Google Science Fair it launched earlier this year for students aged 13-18 around the world.
The top 15 out of 7,500 projects will vie for prizes, including $100,000 in scholarships, internships at Google and a trip to the Galapagos Islands. The finalists, narrowed down from 10,000 students from 91 countries, are now at Google’s Mountain View headquarters for the event.
Google invoked the upbringings of its own founders, Sergey Brin and Larry Page, to encourage young scientists to take part in the event designed to encourage youths to partake in science.
Separately, Google has some new research of its own on the way in conjunction with a handful of German schools. The Institute for Internet and Society will open in Berlin, Germany in October to examine issues such as Internet governance and policy as well as media governance and constitutional law.
