Internet2, Energy Sciences Network joining forces to build high-speed network to be used for clean energy, climate research
A new national 100Gbps prototype network being built for the Department of Energy will provide about a tenfold increase in speed for labs doing research together on topics such as clean energy and climate change. Overall, the network will boast 4.4Tbps of capacity to support thousands of researchers at more than 40 U.S. labs and supercomputing facilities.
The DoE’s Berkeley Lab Energy Sciences Network (ESnet) is building the research testbed in conjunction with Internet2, which has bolstered its own network for educational institutions and researchers with 100Gbps Ethernet waves throughout via tens of millions of dollars in stimulus funding. Technology from Level 3 Communications and Ciena will be at the foundation of the ESnet network.

“The [Advanced Networking Initiative] prototype is a crucial step forward to a future nationwide 100 Gbps production network that will connect DOE scientists with unprecedented network capabilities to conduct data-intensive research and collaborations, bolstering U.S. scientific innovation in areas that will impact society, such as climate studies, clean fuels, particle physics, and genomics,” said Steve Cotter, ESnet department head, in a statement.
