Operations Manager joins the group of System Center v.Next products in beta
Last week, Microsoft released a long-awaited beta version of their upcoming System Center Operations Manager 2012 product. If you attended TechEd Europe last year, MMS, TechEd USA, or Microsoft’s Worldwide Partner Conference (WPC) this year, you were teased with previews of one of the various pre-beta builds.
What does this new version bring to the table?
- The root management server, introduced in the 2007 version, is eliminated. Instead, there is a pool of management servers that facilitates failover should a management server go down.
- Operations Manager 2012 includes additional monitoring capabilities from the previous version, made possible from an earlier EMC Smarts acquisition. This includes monitoring routers, switches, the network interfaces and ports and those devices, and the VLAN that they participate in.
- Microsoft is incorporating their AVIcode acquisition into Operations Manager 2012, enabling you to monitor .NET and JEE application performance in web applications.
- The entire System Center family is taking a tour with the cloud, and Operations Manager is no exception, with the capability to monitor both public and private cloud operations. This includes heterogeneous monitoring, building on the capabilities available in Operations Manager 2007 R2.
- With new dashboard capabilities, templates, and performance and scalability improvements, this version looks to build upon the re-architecture of the product in the 2007 release and bring increased stability and usability.
