Full-duplex wireless technique could double throughput, make video on smartphones much better
Rice University researchers have demonstrated full-duplex wireless technology that they say could double throughput for smartphones and tablets without any serious cell tower or other hardware upgrades.
“Our solution requires minimal new hardware, both for mobile devices and for networks, which is why we’ve attracted the attention of just about every wireless company in the world,” said Ashutosh Sabharwal, professor of electrical and computer engineering at Rice, in a statement. “The bigger change will be developing new wireless standards for full-duplex. I expect people may start seeing this when carriers upgrade to 4.5G or 5G networks in just a few years.”
Rice researchers have exploited multiple-input, multiple-output antenna technologies and others to accomplish their breakthrough. They say their technology will be incorporated into an open-access research system so that other researchers can have at it as well.
Their research was funded by the NSF and others.
