Pew survey reaffirms my stance on texting

Typical adult sends or receives 41.5 text messages every day

Confession: I do not text.

(Pause.)

Now that the gasps have subsided, allow me to explain: Yes, I am a dinosaur, and, yes, I am a home-and-office hermit (a hermitaur?). But the desire to eschew texting has been a conscious one that I review regularly, such as this morning after having read this story about new research from Pew.

The research reveals that those adults who do text send or receive an average of 41.5 messages per day, unless they are in the 18 to 24 age group, in which case they could not be surveyed because they are too busy texting.

I do understand that some of those 41.5 messages would replace phone calls and e-mail that I already endure, but don’t try to tell me it would be the bulk of them or that texting would save me time.

I also know that the day is coming when I will be forced to relent; that day being when my three children get their own cell phones. However, they are only 10 years old at the moment and I’m nowhere near buckling on the matter of them getting phones. (In fact, I’ve told Emma that every time she asks for a cell phone I’m going to push the date she’ll be allowed to have one out another month. As of today, she’s getting a phone when she turns 26.)

In the meantime, I need 41.5 text messages every day like I need a surf board.
