iPhone retention is tops in the industry at 89%, handily beating all other Android handsets in the market.
A recent survey of smartphone owners conducted by UBS reveals that Apple’s iPhone enjoys the highest retention rate in the smartphone industry at 89%. Lagging way behind in second place is HTC with a retention rate of 39% and RIM in third place with a retention rate of 33%. Taken together, the retention rate for Android devices is 55%.
So while Google likes to tout its 500,000+ activations per day, one can reasonably argue that this achievement is somewhat illusory to the extent that Android owners are less likely than iPhone owners to remain loyal to the brand and become repeat customers. And in business, where keeping existing customers is markedly cheaper than attracting new ones, a loyal customer is paramount.
Further illustrating Apple’s advantage of its Android counterparts, the chart below reveals that the majority of smartphone users looking to switch to another handset are migrating to Apple’s iPhone. Samsung and HTC, meanwhile, can barely attract as many new customers as they’re losing. Entrenched in an even worse position are RIM and Nokia who continue to lose customers en masse.
