Former US Vice President Al Gore last week may have tipped Apple’s hand regarding its upcoming iPhone plans.
While giving a speech at the Discovery Invest Leadership Summit in South Africa a few days ago, Gore raised some eyebrows when he matter-of-factly stated, “Not to mention the new iPhones coming out next month. That was a plug.”
Now before you scoff at the idea of Gore spilling the beans, or even having the requisite insight into Apple’s plans, remember that Gore is an Apple board member who was part of the big unveiling of the original iPhone back in 2007. In other words, Gore is in a unique position to have credible and advanced knowledge of Apple’s product plans.
That said, Gore’s phrasing of “new iPhones” – note the plural form – is particularly intriguing given the bevy of rumors pointing to two new iPhone models set for release this year. As we’ve discussed previously, rumor has it that Apple will be releasing a low cost iPhone (likely dubbed the iPhone 4S) concurrently with a worldmode iPhone 5 that will likely feature a brand new teardrop form factor with a larger screen.
We’ll know for sure on October 4th when Tim Cook takes to the stage to mark the first iPhone announcement sans Steve Jobs.
