A iPhone 4S reference was found in a recently issued iTunes beta
This past Friday, Apple released the ninth beta of iTunes 10.5. By all accounts, the release appeared to be a ho-hum update with tweaks pertaining to iTunes Match functionality and the like.
But it didn’t take long for developers to find strings in the beta that made reference to an iPhone 4S model. What’s more, the screenshot used in conjunction with the iPhone 4S was that of a CDMA iPhone 4.
Clearly, Apple has inadvertently indicated that there will, at the very least, be an iPhone model dubbed the iPhone 4S. It doesn’t stand to reason that Apple was using the iPhone 4S moniker as a placeholder given the specificity. It is possible, albeit unlikely, that the image of the CDMA iPhone 4 was used as a placeholder for the iPhone 4S given the mountain of evidence pointing towards an iPhone 4S device with the same form factor as the iPhone 4.
Lending even more weight to an iPhone 4S with the same form factor as the iPhone 4 is the fact that Apple pulled the aforementioned iTunes beta shortly after releasing it to developers.
iTunes only holds two iPhone 4S references: black and white versus the four iPhone 4 references of black/GSM, black/CDMA, white/GSM, and white/CDMA. This may also confirm the rumors of the new iPhone being a dual-mode/CDMA + GSM handset.
The only question, at this point, is whether or not Apple will also release an iPhone 5 model with a larger screen and new teardrop design form factor.
As for the iPhone 4S, it’s largely believed that Apple’s new device will sport an 8-megapixel camera, an A5 dual core processor, along with Assistant – Apple’s voice recognition software app that’s rumored to be the focus of Apple’s upcoming media event. Also on deck, rumor has it, is a cheaper iPhone 4 model that will presumably come with 8GB of capacity. Other reports have indicated that Apple will price this low-cost iPhone 4 aggressively and, for the first time, make it available as a prepaid option as well.
Thankfully, all of this nebulous iPhone speculation will finally come to an end this Tuesday when Tim Cook will take the stage at Apple’s Cupertino campus to introduce a next-gen iPhone/s and more. The event kicks off at 10 a.m Pacific Time.
