Dad learns you can’t predict where tree limbs will fall

Snowstorm drops large tree limbs over my childhood home

My Dad still lives in the house where I grew up.

However, a good deal of the massive tree in his front yard no longer does, as huge portions came crashing down during the weekend’s snowstorm here in the Northeast.

One limb smashed the windshield of Dad’s car, which he had moved from its customary spot at the top of the driveway to the bottom, nearer the street, in what proved to be a failed attempt to avoid just such a fate. Another couple landed on the roof, but appeared to do no serious damage. Yet another ripped the electrical wiring off the side of the house, although the electricity was still on when I left there yesterday.

A neighbor, who I had never met previously, put in a solid hour with his chainsaw as we got most of the debris off the car and the yard. Some we couldn’t get near, though, because it was hanging over live wires.

All in all, it could have been worse.

Of course, it wouldn’t have been quite so bad, either, if he’d just parked where he always parks.
