I mean besides the fact that it's the truth
Good, but why bother?
The stated reason is that thousands of petitioners asked. From the White House blog post:
Thank you for signing the petition asking the Obama Administration to acknowledge an extraterrestrial presence here on Earth.
The U.S. government has no evidence that any life exists outside our planet, or that an extraterrestrial presence has contacted or engaged any member of the human race. In addition, there is no credible information to suggest that any evidence is being hidden from the public’s eye.
Again, why bother? After all, there are two types of people in this world – those who believe aliens have been among us and those, like me, who believe it’s only happened in the movies. No member of either group is likely to be shaken off their belief by a White House blog post.
Actually, however, there is a third group: the undecideds, be they those for the whom the question holds insufficient interest, the cases offered for either position hold insufficient sway … or, be they just too young to have a fully formed opinion.
It’s possible, therefore – just possible – that a few folks might take such a direct declaration by the government to heart. It’s also the right thing to do.
So I for one welcome this statement from our truth-telling White house overlords.
