RIM asks: What's your BlackBerry phone called? I ask: What should I name mine?
UPDATE: 11/9/11:
Turns out that many of you weren’t keen on my the BlackBerry names I listed in the poll below, and had ideas of your own that you entered into the Other category. These include:
Obsolete, SchwettyBerry, iberry, Dead Phone Walking, nofun, BerryScary, Boldly Go, RottenBerry, BerryBerryPhonePhone, RIMROD, Bad Bobby, iphone wannabe, Barnaby Jones (?), siri and zanadu, plus an obligatory few not fit for this family website…
Little did I realize what a deadbeat BlackBerry Bold owner I was until I read a post on Inside BlackBerry, RIM’s official BlackBerry blog, that’s all about what people name their phones.
(A daring move by RIM in light of the recent outage that I’m sure had people calling their BlackBerries all sorts of unflattering names.)
It never occurred to me to name my BlackBerry “Precious,” “wife” or even “Boldie,” like some BlackBerry owners have, as illustrated in this Wordle from the BlackBerry blog.
I feel especially bad in light of the fact that I did oh-so-cleverly name my trusty old iPod nano “poddymouth,” but that’s because I was prompted by Apple to do so when first registering the iPod with iTunes. I also named my acoustic guitar, which I found on a sidewalk years ago the night before garbage pickup, Giselle (well before Patriots QB Tom Brady got together with the supermodel of that name). And I know plenty of organizations give cutesy, yet practical names to their networked servers (we’ve even held contests about this over the years).
So, in light of all this, I’ve decided to name my BlackBerry, even though I’m not sure how long I’m going to hang onto it in the face of tantalizing iPhones and Android phones being dangled in front of me relentlessly by friends, carriers and phone makers. I’ve never had too much sympathy for people who can’t come up with names, such as for their kids or dogs, but I could use your help on this urgent matter. Please chime in via the poll below:
