As determined by nothing more scientific than number of readers
As another year winds to a close, we pause to ask: What did Buzzblog readers actually read when they came to visit Buzzblog in 2011? Here are the top 20 items (a few of which are slideshows and one of which was a news story that didn’t actually run on the blog, but were nonetheless my work):
1) First up is the fifth in what has become an annual collection notable historical events: 2011’s 25 Geekiest 25th anniversaries.
2) As the country commemorated the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, we used the Internet Archive Wayback Machine to see: What online news looked like on 9/11.
3) It feels your pain and it need not necessarily be blue anymore: Blue Screen of Death gets a new look in Windows 8 (above).
4) This one gets filed under Missed Opportunities: If you had bought 100 shares of Microsoft 25 years ago …
5) Seems not a day goes by without someone getting into trouble of some kind using Twitter: Microsoft apologizes for using Japan disaster to market Bing.
6) While others just as regularly use Twitter to win themselves instant Internet fame, witness: IT consultant accidentally live blogs Bin Laden raid.
7) Not to be outdone by Microsoft’s new BSoD, Google stepped up the plate with: Google gives antiquated 404 page a makeover.
8) We coaxed a few of you network professionals into confessing a dirty little semi-secret: On the company dime: Rogue game server admins tell all.
9) One of the most recent posts on the list chronicled one of the year’s most bizarre mishaps: Mythbusters’ cannonball misfire still reverberating.
10) And inspired this cool aerial map: Follow the Mythbusters’ bouncing cannonball.
11) Whether coincidence or not, another item was followed by certain high-profile Google execs becoming more publicly active on Google+: Has Google’s CEO stopped using Google+?
12) Yet this one went largely unnoticed over there: Did Google+ ban cleavage-snuggling LEGO stormtrooper?
13) Proving once again that everyone needs a hobby: IT pro’s perfect game puts him in Putt-Putt record book.
14) You knew that Apple was founded on April Fools’ Day, right?: 35 years of ‘Apple’ Fools Day fun.
15) Well, don’t try telling that to one of the company’s founders: Wozniak questions long-accepted date of ‘Day One’ at Apple.
16) It’s hard to imagine someone doing this today, getting caught, and not going to jail: Captain Midnight: ‘No regrets’ about jamming HBO back in ’86.
17) And this one gets filed under No Respect: It’s Programmer Day! … (Is that the best you can do?)
18) This was personal and just as controversial this time around as when I wrote about it 20 years ago: My collision with Andy Rooney’s ethical blind spot.
19) I had gamers tell me they understood where this guy was coming from: WoW player offers $1,000 bribe to have account ban lifted.
20) And, finally, we learned that there are serious gamers and then there’s this fellow: Googler’s LAN-party house sparks awe and envy.
