The prospect of no weekend train service is one thing ...
This morning I signed an online petition urging public transit officials here in Massachusetts to resist abolishing weekend train service, which some consider underutilized and expendable in the face of a large budget gap.
Not an hour later I see this Reuters picture from India with the caption: “Overcrowded trains prepare to leave for the city after the final prayer ceremony of Bishwa Ijtema in Tongi, on the outskirts of Dhaka.”
While I had never seen a picture of such startlingly dangerous overcrowding before, this peril is common in India.
And my guess is there are few discussions about underutilized trains.
