Aw, geez, why couldn’t this have been just another Twitter celebrity death hoax?
Sadly, no, the news comes from TMZ that Monkees lead singer Davey Jones has died of a heart attack at age 66.
An official from the medical examiner’s office for Martin County, Florida confirmed with TMZ they received a call from Martin Memorial Hospital informing them that Jones had passed away.
A rep for the singer tells us Jones suffered a heart attack at his home this morning … and was transported to a hospital where he was pronounced dead.
I’ll never forget standing in the kitchen of my childhood home listening to the countertop AM radio to make sure — because it was important — that “Daydream Believer” was still No. 1 on that week’s countdown (December, 1967). Same for the arguments with my sister: Beatles vs. Monkeys, Monkeys vs. Beatles. Yes, in retrospect, I was arguing the ridiculous side, but I was 10 and she was a far-more-sophisticated 13.
Man, I feel old.
