Microsoft Research recently demoed touchscreen technology with 1ms latency
endif; ?>One of the more common complaints about Android devices is that the multitouch screen demonstrates much more lag than the iPhone. In a widely disseminated blogpost exploring the reasons behind the discrepancy, former Google intern Andrew Munn explained that UI rendering in iOS is given top priority over all other processes. In Android, on the other, rendering occurs “on the main thread with normal priority.”
There’s no question that UI responsiveness is a key part of the user experience, and Microsoft is working hard to eliminate as much lag as possible.
According to Paul Dietz, who works in Microsoft’s Applied Sciences Group, most touchscreens today have a latency of 100ms. But Dietz and co. have developed a new touchscreen technology which is able to get that latency down to 10ms. That may not seem like a huge change since we’re talking about milliseconds here, but when demonstrated in the video below, the difference is astonishing.
It’s not clear what Microsoft plans on doing with this technology since it’s not clear how far along it is in the development process – not to mention that it’s still a research project at this point.
