In late February, Apple acquired an app discovery company called Chomp in an apparent effort to facilitate the means by which iTunes users search for and discover new applications. It’s also been rumored that Apple is planning to incorporate Chomp’s technology into the entirety of the iTunes Store to enable users to find movies, music, and TV shows more efficiently.
And with over 500,000 apps, millions of songs, and let’s not forget about video, search on iTunes is arguably as important as the content itself. After all, what good is solid content if users have trouble finding it. Shortly after the acquisition, Chomp CEO Ben Keighran joined Apple’s iTunes marketing team while CTO Cathy Edwards became a senior iTunes engineer.
Now, two months later, Apple has pulled the plug on the Android version of Chomp.
Gigaom reports that “the casualty of that acquisition is the Chomp for Android app which seems to have been discontinued. It is hard to figure out what is going to happen to Chomp’s deal with Verizon.”
The Chomp website now only lets users search for apps for the iPhone and iPad, removing the previously live link allowing users to search for apps on the Android platform.
I suppose it was inevitable.
