Apple issued a press release on Thursday announcing the retirement of Bob Mansfield, Apple’s Senior VP of Hardware engineering. While Mansfield may not be as prominent as Scott Forstall, Mansfield was always a familiar face on those informative videos where Apple explained the process and design behind new hardware products.
“Bob has been an instrumental part of our executive team, leading the hardware engineering organization and overseeing the team that has delivered dozens of breakthrough products over the years,” Tim Cook said in the press release. “We are very sad to have him leave and hope he enjoys every day of his retirement.”
Stepping in for Mansfield will be long time Apple VP of engineering Dan Riccio who had previously served as Apple’s VP of Product Design.
“Dan has been one of Bob’s key lieutenants for a very long time and is very well respected within Apple and by the industry,” Cook added. “Our hardware engineering team is the best engineering team on earth and will not miss a beat during the transition.”
The press release points out that Mansfield, an Apple employee since 1999, played an instrumental role in the hardware engineering involved in the development of the iPhone and iPad, and of course, Apple’s slew of laptops and iMacs.
Perhaps not so coincidentally, but Mansfield a few months ago, back when shares of Apple were near their all-time high, sold 99% of his Apple holdings, clearing a cool $13.6 million in the process. Now that’s some solid retirement spending cash right there.
