Researchers build distributed network algorithm inspired by tree frog calls
endif; ?>Researchers at Polytechnic University of Catalonia have designed an algorithm for wireless network efficiency that was inspired by the calling patterns of Japenese tree frogs.
The paper “Distributed Graph Coloring: An Approach Based on the Calling Behavior of Japanese Tree Frogs” spells out the researchers’ findings in detail, but in a nutshell, male frogs have figured out a way not to call females at the exact same time so that the subject of their courting can more easily determine the whereabouts of her callers. The researchers borrow from this calling behavior to allow nodes in a distributed network to identify each other (by color, on a graph) in such a way that they can more efficiently communicate using artificial intelligence, without a central overseer.
