The confirmation came by way of invitations sent out to select media outlets (see below).

Now, in light of the fact that Apple’s third-generation iPad wasn’t called the iPad 3, there has been speculation over the past few months that perhaps Apple’s next-gen smartphone might simply be called Apple’s latest iPhone. The invitation below however, with the prominent image of the numerical ‘5’ on full display, should put those arguments to bed. Besides, the iPhone 5 has a certain ring to it, and arguably a sense of gravitas – which of course is fitting given that the iPhone 5 is poised to be the hottest selling and most significant upgrade in the device’s history.
The iPhone 5 will be the first iPhone model with a screen larger than 3.5 inches. Leaked displays and iPhone 5 parts, not to mention a slew of rumors over the past 10 or so months, have all pointed to an iPhone 5 with a 4-inch display. And if that werent enough to demand lines around Apple retail stores on launch day, it’s largely believed that the iPhone 5 will support 4G LTE as well. Whereas the iPhone 4S brought with it rather minor upgrades, the iPhone 5 has two significant improvements right out of the gate. And that doesn’t even include the software enhancements we’ll see with iOS 6, which includes a completely revamped Maps app completely devoid of Google influence.
With the unveiling set for the 12th, rumor has it that the iPhone 5 will actually hit store shelves 9 days later on September 21.
It’s also been rumored that Apple will use the upcoming September 12th media event to announce a completely refreshed lineup of iPods. We’re talking new Shuffles, a rumored iPod Nano redesign, and last but not least, a brand new iPod Touch with a larger screen – much like the iPhone 5.
All in all, September is shaping up to be a wildly busy month for Apple, which of course sets the stage for October where Apple will reportedly unveil revamped iMacs and the highly anticipated 7.85-inch iPad Mini.
And finally, as we return to the iPhone for a second, there have been a plethora of leaked iPhone parts over the last few weeks. And so, we even have a video of the iPhone 5 rendered in 3D, based on said leaks. I gotta say, it looks extremely sleek. Indeed, leaked parts suggest the iPhone 5 will be noticeably smaller than the iPhone 4S.
