Ahead of tomorrow’s iPhone 5 launch, Apple yesterday made the latest iteration of iOS, iOS 6, available for download for the masses. But Apple wasn’t just done there, they also released OS X 10.8.2 to the public via the Mac App Store. And that was just the beginning.
Also subject to the upgrade treatment were a slew of iOS apps, including GarageBand, iMovie, iBooks, iTunes U, Cards, iPhoto, and Find My Friends. In other words, Apple’s servers were working overtime yesterday and the resulting web traffic was easily noticeable.
Sandvine has put together a chart highlighting traffic levels for iTunes and the Mac App Store in the wake of Apple’s multitude of releases. And as they saying goes, a picture is worth a thousand words.
The discernable uptick at 1 p.m. eastern time is when iOS 6 first became available, and note how the traffic just increased steadily throughout the night before dropping a tad at around midnight. Sandvine notes that the resulting traffic was over nine times as high as typical daily traffic levels.
