Star Wars themed Angry Birds set for launch on November 8

It’s one thing for a mobile game to become extremely popular. But it’s rather rare for a game to become so popular that it becomes part of the mainstream vernacular. Such is the success of Angry Birds, the popular franchise developed by Rovio.

The most recent iteration of Angry Birds was Angry Birds Space, and to say it’s been a runaway hit would be an understatement. The title was initially downloaded over 50 million times in under 40 days, and as of June 2012 has been downloaded over 100 million times across all gaming platforms.

And so how does Rovio go and top that? Why with Angry Birds Star Wars of course. If you listen closely, you can hear nerds in the background rejoicing wildly.

The game is set  to be released on November 8 and as you might expect, it features the characters, themes, and settings from a number of Star Wars films. Rovio CEO Peter Vesterbacka didn’t mince words when saying that Angry Birds Star Wars is the “best Angry Birrds we’ve ever done.” He explained that it’s “the best parts of Angry Birds with all new cutting-edge gameplay set in in a galaxy far, far away.”

So if you happen to be an Angry Birds addict (who isn’t?) and a Star Wars fan, prepare to see your favorite winged creatures turn into some of your favorite Star Wars characters, from Luke Skywalker to Chewbacca.

And, naturally, expect an avalanche of toys and other forms of Star Wars-themed Angry Birds merchandise to pop up this Haloween and during the upcoming holiday shopping season. Rovio has always been great when it comes to product merchandising and their upcoming Star Wars collaboration is bound to be their most successful effort yet, with Hasbro on board to release a slew of games and toys in the coming weeks.

And if you’re not a smartphone user by chance, don’t fret. The title will also be available for the Mac and PC as well.
