Sources say first release of Insieme switch will use Broadcom chips
Unconfirmed details are starting to emerge on the Cisco Nexus 9000, the new data center switch being developed by spin-in candidate Insieme Networks. Cisco is expected to introduce the Insieme-built Nexus 9000 line Nov. 6.
Contrary to previous speculation, the Nexus 9000 will initially be optimized for high-density 40G Ethernet applications, not 100G. At first release, the eight-slot switch will support 288 40G ports, sources say.

And even though Insieme is spinning its own custom ASICs, those won’t appear until the second release of the switch in about a year, sources say. The first release of the Nexus 9000 will operate on Broadcom’s Trident 2, Titan and HiGig2 chipsets — three Trident 2’s will connect a Nexus 9000 line card to the Titan fabric using HiGig2 interfaces, they say.
Rival Juniper had to default to Broadcom silicon in its QFabric data center switching line when its own ASICs reportedly wouldn’t work.
Cisco declined comment on this information. But here, what one source claims, is command output from the Insieme switch showing the Nexus 9000 — N9K — designation (looks like a Nexus 9508) and the HiGig content:
