Move brings VMware/EMC backed startup beyond just cloud, PaaS and Big Data, toward mobile app development

Pivotal – which is the initiative spun out of VMware and EMC – has purchased mobile application development company Xtreme Labs.

Pivotal is reportedly paying $65 million for the Toronto-based company, according to a report.

The news is significant because Pivotal already has its fingers in a number of buckets, including cloud, big data and platform as a service (PaaS). This acquisition – which would be Pivotal’s first as a company – would bring mobile juice to the company as well.

Xtreme Labs’ website has announced the deal.

Pivotal is a young company, but because of its backing by VMware and EMC, it received considerable attention within cloud circles. It’s led by former VMware CEO Paul Maritz, and recently signed a major partnership/investment with General Electric.

Some of the projects in the Pivotal portfolio include the Cloud Foundry PaaS and EMC’s big data Greenplum initiative. Now, mobile app development form Xtreme can be added to that list.
