Piston Cloud Computing Co.’s Josh McKenty made quite a stir earlier this year when he rehashed an old saying by a Microsoft executive to describe cloud computing in simplistic terms. Puppies or cows.
The idea is that IT managers should treat their virtual machines as cattle, not pets. If one dies, fine, move on to the next one. Don’t sweat over each VM as if it’s a household animal. The notion encapsulates the whole idea of cloud computing; spin up and deprovision VMs as you need them; manage clusters, not instances.
