Mother of modern computing would have been 107 today
The Google Doodle on the search giant’s main page today honors Grace Hopper, the American computer scientist and Navy Rear Admiral whose work led directly to creation of the COBOL programming language as well as to advances in computer networking. Hopper, who has had everything from a Navy destroyer to a supercomputer named after her, would have been 107 today, Dec. 9.
The doodle shows Hopper sitting at a computer terminal, and upon first visting the search page, clicking on the doodle triggers a computing process that calculates what her current age would be.
An annual conference named after Hopper focuses on bringing computer education to women around the world.
