Whether this actually comes to fruition remains to be seen
Microsoft’s announcement this morning that longtime engineering executive Satya Nadella will replace Steve Ballmer as chief executive officer was no surprise. And news that company founder Bill Gates would be relinquishing his role as chairman of the board of directors had also been predicted in press reports.
What was surprising, however – at least to me – is Microsoft’s contention that Gates will now be devoting more of his time to the company. From today’s press release:
Microsoft also announced that Bill Gates, previously Chairman of the Board of Directors, will assume a new role on the Board as Founder and Technology Advisor, and will devote more time to the company, supporting Nadella in shaping technology and product direction. John Thompson, lead independent director for the Board of Directors, will assume the role of Chairman of the Board of Directors and remain an independent director on the Board.
That’s just a press release, of course, and whether Gates indeed becomes more actively involved in “shaping technology and product direction” will remain to be seen.
If he does, he can only help.
