Photos of upcoming iPod Nano cases all but confirm that Apple will announce a completely redesigned iPod Nano at this weeks media event, scheduled for Wednesday, September 1.
Most of the attention surrounding Apple’s upcoming media event has focused on a new iPod Touch with a front facing camera and, to a lesser extent, the potential for a revamped Apple TV. But now comes word, via leaked casings, that the iPod Nano is poised to undergo a radical new redesign.posted photos of alleged casings for the next-gen iPod Nano. Evidently, Apple is planning to update the Nano’s form factor from a tall and slender device into something more squarish, and somewhat reminisicent of the old iPod Shuffle.

The new Nano will reportedly sport a 3cm-by-3cm display, and though it remains unclear how the UI will function, a touchscreen is probably a safe bet. Notably, while sales of the iPod Touch continue to skyrocket quarter after quarter, the iPod Nano is increasingly being left on the shelf. While a radical new design won’t necessarily propel the Nano past the flagship iPod Touch, it may be enough to keep sales of the device steady, which is all Apple can hope for at this point. And at the end of the day, if consumers are ignoring the cheaper Nano in favor of the more expensive and higher-margin iPod Touch, well then that’s a pretty good problem to have.

And earlier today, 9to5Mac pointed to a brand new case design from alibaba which appears to confirm the new design of the next-gen iPod Nano.
Apple’s upcoming media event is set to kick off on this coming Wednesday.
