Last week’s introduction of Skype Connect highlights the increasing ability for enterprise buyers to leverage IP-based voice services to reduce operating costs. Skype Connect replaces the “Skype for SIP” beta with a commercial outbound SIP trunking offering that also enables in-bound calling from the millions of Skype users around the world.
SIP trunking adoption rose 61% from 2009 to 2010 with 31% of companies currently deploying, while 96% are either planning future deployments or evaluating service offerings. IT buyers report savings of 20-60% versus TDM-based services.
IT buyers should evaluate new services to reduce telecom costs, consider Skype Connect to directly connect to Skype users. For service providers, it’s a race to the bottom as SIP trunking drives down long distance and PSTN access costs.
