The FCC opens up more spectrum for wireless.
Television broadcasters may not be happy about it, but as a consumer this could turn into some serious wireless bandwidth. The FCC is opening up the spectrum typically reserved for broadcast TV, with certain caveats on how that spectrum can be used depending on where you are. (Confused?)
Broadcast TV channels operate in different parts of the spectrum, with the space between the used spectrum being called “white space”.
Wi-Fi manufacturers and service providers have been clamoring for more spectrum for years, and this is a very big win for them. Wi-Fi has traditionally been limited to very confined areas, and has had to use not-so-good spectrum. This new spectrum could be a real game changer.
Of course, there are the television broadcasters to consider.
Part of the rules around the use of white space will include details on how “installers” (companies offering the Wi-Fi service) ensure they don’t eat into used spectrum. Consider white space is, by definition, located between two actively used bands, this could be tricky. I have a feeling there is going to be friction over the years as the new Wi-Fi bleeds into the bands used by the broadcasters.
