802.11n is often viewed by wireless managers as a panacea for all their ails. Simply turn it on and all your concerns about QoS to support voice and having enough bandwidth to support any and all types of users and applications simply melt away.
Unfortunately, it’s not quite that simple. Recently Abilene Christian University found that a growing number of Apple iPhones were crowding out spectrum meant for the Universities 802.11n users. The culprit – reliance on the 2.4 Ghz range, an unallocated and increasingly crowded slice of spectrum. 802.11n end-points can also support the reserved 5 Ghz space, offering potential for respite from iPhones which today only support 2.4 Ghz, but since many companies are deploying 802.11n as an upgrade to their existing 802.11 b/g access points (running 2.4 Ghz), additional planning is required to migrate 802.11n users to 5 Ghz.
Given the ability of devices in the 2.4 Ghz range to interfere with 802.11b/g/n services, consider the impact of enabling n support for iPhone/iPad and other 2.4 Ghz-only devices before starting your roll-out.
