Ethernet Alliance plans "closed-door" trials, public demos
Now that the IEEE has ratified the 802.3az Energy Efficient Ethernet standard, it’s time for the interoperability plugfests. For its part, Cisco claims to be a “primary sponsor” of 802.3az.
The Ethernet Alliance, meanwhile, plans to host compliance and interoperability testing of EEE products through a series of “closed-door” test events, the group said this week. The alliance also plans to hold technology seminars and public demonstrations – likely after the “closed-door” sessions prove successful.
A pre-standard interoperability event was already held earlier this year at the University of New Hampshire’s Interoperability Labs.
EEE is an amendment to the IEEE 802.3 base Ethernet standard. It is specified for use with 100BASE-TX, 1000BASE-T, 1000BASE-KX, 10GBASE-T, 10GBASE-KX4 and 10GBASE-KR twisted pair and backplane interconnects, as well as a lower voltage 10Mbps connection called 10BASE-Te.
EEE includes the ability for these interconnects to be put into a low power idle when utilization drops. The standard allows for the use of the Layer 2 Link Layer Discovery Protocol to determine when a port should be put into low power idle mode.
