In a story that captivated the world, 33 trapped Chilean miners were rescued earlier this week. Touched by the story, Steve Jobs reportedly sent each one an iPod Touch.
Over the past 69 days, while most of us went along living our normal lives, a group of 33 Chilean miners were trapped hundreds of feet underground as an assortment of engineers tried to devise a plan to extricate them to safety. The story captivated the world, and the miners’ resilience in the face of unimaginable adversity served as an inspiration to many.
This past week, the drama in Chile came to an end when all 33 miners were lifted up a distance of approximately 650 meters (2000+ feet) to safety where they subsequently cried, laughed, celebrated, and were reunited with friends and loved ones. Over the course of 44 hours, television cameras documented the amazing rescue, and below is footage of the last miner, Luis Urzúa, returning safely to the surface.
Now how does this all relate to Apple?
Well, in the wake of the amazing rescue, the 33 miners have become international celebrities of sorts, and gifts are pouring in from all corners of the globe. In addition to money and even free island tours, each of the 33 miners also received a brand new iPod Touch from Steve Jobs.
