Overtakes D-Link in Q2, according to In-Stat
By acquiring 3Com, HP solidified its position as the No. 2 vendor in Ethernet switching revenue behind Cisco. It is also now the No. 2 vendor in port shipments, surpassing D-Link, according to market researcher In-Stat.
HP now accounts for 20% of the port shipments in Ethernet switching in the second quarter, while D-Link is responsible for 19%, according to In-Stat. Cisco and its small business unit account for 42% of the ports shipped in Q2, while Netgear contributed 8%, the firm found.
In-Stat notes, however, that the jury is still out on whether HP will become a stronger competitor to Cisco due to the 3Com acquisition. But the port shipment increases may be a promising sign.
HP’s gain may be due to slashing prices, however. The firm found that while port shipments grew 3.3% between Q1 and Q2, revenues decreased 2%. Total fixed port shipments grew 3.7% in that period, while revenues decreased .7%.
Money makers are 10G and PoE, In-Stat notes. PoE revenues accounted for 18.3% of total Ethernet switch revenues from Q1 to Q2. Overall 10G port shipments actually decreased 5.3% while revenue grew 2.5% due to demand for Layer 3 ports.
But fixed 10G port shipments grew 21.1% while revenues grew 6.6% between Q1 and Q2, In-Stat found.
