Microsoft announces a new System Center component
Last week at TechEd Europe, Microsoft announced Project Atlanta. When I first heard about Atlanta earlier this year, it was so secret that all they would tell me was the code name, not anything about the project! Atlanta is now public knowledge, with the public beta released November 9, and here’s some details on it:
Atlanta doesn’t replace Operations Manager, it complements it. It will work with OpsMgr 2007 R2, and can monitor SQL Server 2008 and SQL Server 2008 R2 deployments.
Think of Atlanta as a BPA (Best Practices Analyzer) of sorts, but different from other BPAs that you have to run to get the analysis, Atlanta is always active. Atlanta is a cloud service intended to help you avoid configuration problems, reduce downtime, improve performance, and resolve issues faster.
Atlanta sends configuration information about your environment to Microsoft support.
Atlanta is integrated with the OpsMgr agent – if you’ve installed OpsMgr and are using the agent to monitor your environment, you don’t need to install another agent. The agents will multihome. There would be a separate management group for Atlanta and a connector, and the agent will send information to both the OpsMgr and Atlanta management groups.
The rules used by Atlanta are not currently visible in the OpsMgr Operations console, only in the cloud.
