Drives content segment in Q3, but down in network security

Cisco propped up the content security market in Q3 with 30% sequential growth, while experiencing a down quarter in network security, according to new data from Infonetics. Overall, the network security market was flat from Q2 as more sales shift to content security, the firm found.

The worldwide content security gateway market grew 10% sequentially to $715.2 million. Gateway revenue is up 25% from last year, while appliance revenue was up 35%.

Threats such as stuxnet and Zeus are helping to drive that revenue, Infonetics found. Also, the explosion of mobile devices in the workforce, many of which are personal and not company-sanctioned, is driving sales of gateways to ward off malware.

McAfee is and has been first in total content security gateway revenue — appliances and software. Blue Coat is second and Cisco third, although Cisco surpassed Blue Coat in appliance revenue, Infonetics found. The worldwide network security appliance and software market was down 0.1% sequentially, totaling $1.43 billion. Cisco lost market share in most network security categories while Juniper and Check Point gained, especially in the >$30K integrated security appliance category, where Juniper has opened up a “substantial” lead, according to Infonetics.

The firm says Juniper posted its biggest quarter ever in SSL VPN revenue, widening its market share lead.
