And a fine example of how the rich view the world differently
Veering off topic: A story in this morning’s New York Times is on the surface about the outrageous indignity suffered by some 100 holiday visitors with reservations after they were displaced from the Waldorf-Astoria in favor of King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia, who popped into town unexpectedly for medical care with a royal entourage not accustomed to being told there’s no room at even the swankiest inn.
I say on the surface because it’s just as much about how the rich are different than the rest of us.
As I started to read the story, my sympathies naturally lined up behind those given the bum’s rush. I mean fair is fair and this didn’t seem fair (still doesn’t).
But then I got to the part where one of the unlucky families was told where they’d have to stay instead:
Reluctantly, the Morgans accepted the Waldorf’s offer of alternate accommodations, including a free night’s stay, at the nearby Hilton New York. But the world-famous Waldorf was supposed to be the highlight of the trip, she said. “They assured us the Hilton was just as nice, but come on, there were people in the elevators at the Hilton carrying pizza boxes.”
Pizza boxes! Oh, the humanity.
I do hope the king is recovering well.
