Over half of 100 large enterprises plan data center technology refreshes this year
In the News That Will Please Cisco Dept., most large enterprises are gearing up for technology refreshes in their data centers this year, while a large percentage are prioritizing around data center consolidation.
These are the findings of a survey of 100 large enterprises conducted in December by SANpulse Technologies, a provider of professional services and monitoring and optimization tools for data centers. The survey asked data center managers to rank their priorities for 2011, based on importance, as well as concerns on the tasks they face this year.
Fifty-one percent of respondents said technology refreshes top the list for 2011 – 10G Ethernet, 16G FibreChannel SANs, converged and virtual I/O, further server virtualization, unified fabrics, flattened switching architectures and the like. Second was data center consolidation, cited as a top concern for 41.5% of respondents.
Next on the list was intent to migrate to a public or private cloud, which was noted by 34.5% of respondents; transition to a virtualized SAN, 32.7%; SAN optimization or “re-tiering,” 26.5%; and diversification of storage hardware, 21%.
Some of the most pressing issues for 2011 include multi-departmental coordination, 39%. Server remediation, SAN configuration errors, asset discovery and multi-departmental coordination were all cited by 35% of respondents.
When upgrading a SAN, 41.5% said 0 to 20% of their refreshes were completed on time and one budget. Sixty-two percent said the 40% or fewer were completed on time and on budget, and 79% have had less than 60% of their SAN upgrades meet their budgetary or time requirements.
While all good news for SANpulse, it will undoubtedly be welcome news to Cisco and other data center vendors as they pitch their servers, SANs, storage, switches and virtualization gear to an IT crowd expected to significantly bolster spending in 2011.
