The convergence of wired and unwired takes another step this week with the launch of LifeSize’s HD content streaming solution for mobile devices. LifeSize Video Center allows companies to push video conferences to mobile users via one-way video streaming. This announcement follows similar efforts from companies such as Vidyo, as well as Skype and Apple to bring video conferencing to smartphones and tablets.
More than half of all companies are deploying streaming video solutions, often as a result of video conferencing deployments that drive user demand for the ability to record and share their own video, or record conferences for later playback. Adding the ability to stream live conferences out to mobile users adds another wrinkle to streaming plans. But this is only phase 1. As LTE and WiMax services expand, and as devices capable of 2-way video flood the market (the next release of Apple’s iPad is rumored to have this capability), IT managers can expect a shift in demand away from simply just streaming meetings to instead enabling full two-way participation for mobile workers.
Pay attention to video in the mobile space, evaluate products and services for integrating mobile video with other systems, and for managing video quality and bandwidth consumption.
