Microsoft inspires fresh round of anti-IE6 prose

There are only so many ways to say “IE6 needs to go,” yet headline writers find themselves straining again to find new ones (and not always succeeding) in response to Microsoft’s launch of “The Internet Explorer Countdown” site.

Microsoft itself got things started by declaring on the site that “Friends don’t let friends use Internet Explorer 6.” Nice.

My Network World colleagues went with a just-the-facts approach: “Microsoft boosts kill-IE6 campaign with new countdown site.”

(2011’s 25 Geekiest 25th Anniversaries)

USA Today sees desperation in the move: “Microsoft begs users to stop using IE6.”

More urgent begging here: “Please Help Us Kill IE6! Please!”

This site for programmers compares IE6 to polio: “Microsoft steps up campaign to rid world of IE6.”

Computerworld gets deadly serious: “Microsoft launches IE6 deathwatch.”

The Register works that same field: “Microsoft rallies IE6 death squads.”

PCMag goes kinder/gentler: “Microsoft Urges Users to ‘Say Goodbye’ to IE6 Via Countdown Web Site.”

The Review Crew uses one of my favorites: “Kill It With Fire: Microsoft Posts Countdown To End Of IE6.”

PCWorld seems to concede we’ve exhausted the topic in English: “Microsoft Tries Its Darndest to Bid IE6 Adieu.”

And there are plenty more.

No matter how you say it – and we’re clearly running out of ways – it’s time for IE6 to take a dirt nap.
