Already using cloud and cloud apps like all of computing will in 5 years
The probability that cloud will be the foundation for all IT in the next 3 to 5 years is 100%, says Michael Capellas, chairman and CEO of Virtual Computing Environment, the company formally known as Acadia. Acadia was formed from the joint venture of Cisco, EMC and VMware to tackle virtual data centers.
The ascendance of cloud will map that of IP networking, Capellas said at last week’s Cisco Partner Summit in New Orleans. Twenty years ago, IP bested OSI, SNA and everything other language as the way to network computers. And when the Web opened up the Internet to commerce and easy interaction shortly thereafter, well, you know the rest of the story…
Cloud itself has been under development for the past 7 to 10 years, Capellas said. And consumers, rather than enterprises, are driving its impending ubiquity.
The average number of devices a consumer owns is three, he said. And mobile devices connect 200 million users to Facebook. There are 60 billion instant messages sent daily, and the number concurrent Skype users online is 25 million.
“Is this the cloud or is this not the cloud,” Capellas asked rhetorically. “The cloud will do what we did to IP networks.”
There will be application development clouds to develop applications for the cloud. It is and will be the framework behind, for example, the 400,000+ applications developed for popular Apple consumer platforms and the 190 countries building Facebook applications.
And it will come to the commercial world, Capellas promises.
“Consumers led cloud, and consumers are already using cloud,” Capellas said. “That’s why the probability that it will become the predominant IT infrastructure is 100%.”
But the public cloud assumes one QoS, Capellas noted. So 80% of enterprise clouds will be private, inside the firewall. And there will be a $50 billion market for converged infrastructure – the one VCE is targeting – in three years, he says.
