Day 1 Keynote: System Center Brings Wisdom to Your Clouds
MMS 2012, projected for 3,500 in attendance, has approximately 4,000 attendees, with nearly 50% here for the first time. Today’s keynote was presented by Brad Anderson, Corporate Vice President.
The theme of the conference this year is the cloud and consumerization of IT, and where they come together. With devices that are always on and attached to the cloud today, Microsoft’s focus is on how to empower IT to use the cloud.
What is the cloud? Always subject to debate and discussion, Microsoft defines the cloud as a computer model, not a location where it is running. This takes into account public clouds, private clouds, and even hybrid clouds. Microsoft wants to make the cloud approachable to IT Pros, and the tool for doing so is System Center.
How they will do so:
Offer a self-service experience through Concero (code-named), enabling provisioning with virtual machines, services, and clouds. Concero is built on a Silverlight-based UI. This experience is about building applications that can dynamically expand and contract. It is usage-based, enabling service owners and business units to know what the cost is.
Each service is given a set of boundaries (a cloud) in which it is empowered to run, then it’s business owners can optimize within that environment.
How its delivered:
Through the Hyper-V cloud (this is Microsoft, of course!), and all empowered through System Center. A service consists of logical components of your applications. Its not an individual VM, think of that service as a single component, managed by the various System Center components. That private cloud is all about the application, given the wisdom about the infrastructure and the applications through the System Center suite.
