December 2010 report by Gartner puts Operations Manager 2007 R2 in highly sought spot
Operations Manager 2007 R2 has moved from the “challengers” quadrant to the industry-sought “leaders” or “magic quadrant” for IT Event Correlation and Analysis.
As Gartner says for this area,
‘The core value proposition of these products is to achieve management by exception. This requires an understanding of “normal” behavior in the IT infrastructure and alerting the IT operations staff only when an exception occurs, such as a failure or a threshold breach, indicating that the IT infrastructure is no longer behaving “normally.” With the 2010 Magic Quadrant, the desire to associate events with potential business impact has transitioned from a “wish list” item to something that’s required for current product execution, although not all ECA vendors offer this functionality.’ (See http://www.gartner.com/technology/media-products/reprints/microsoft/vol2/article5/article5.html for the full report)
What does this mean for Microsoft and Operations Manager? Many organizations look to Gartner’s evaluations when considering products to implement. The magic quadrant provides a picture of a vendor’s ability to execute, and its completeness of vision, although Gartner points out you should determine your specific functional and support requirements and prioritizations, as these should drive your decision.
Regardless, making the magic quadrant is considered the holy grail by vendors and often comes into play as part of the software selection decision making process.
Configuration Manager 2007 R3 is also well ranked by Gartner, being in the magic quadrant for PC Configuration Life Cycle Management Tools (http://www.gartner.com/technology/media-products/reprints/microsoft/vol2/article6/article6.html), and System Center itself is in the visionary quadrant for integrated software quality suites (http://www.gartner.com/technology/media-products/reprints/microsoft/vol2/article7/article7.html).
