Osama bin Laden’s hideout in Pakistan famously went without an Internet connection, we are told, yet he managed to send and receive email via sneakernet. (Slashdot’s kicking that around today.)
So it should come as little surprise that he – or someone living with him – managed to acquire a collection of another highly trafficked Internet commodity: porn.

According to a Reuters story:
A stash of pornography was found in the hideout of Osama bin Laden by the U.S. commandos who killed him, current and former U.S. officials said on Friday.
The pornography recovered in bin Laden’s compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan, consists of modern, electronically recorded video and is fairly extensive, according to the officials, who discussed the discovery with Reuters on condition of anonymity.
In addition to Reuters, the story is being reported by a growing multitude of media outlets and has quickly rocketed to the top of Google News. You can imagine the fun that headline writers are having … or, you can take a look at the likes of Gawker (NSFW) and TMZ.
But how about we all stop giggling for just a second (presuming you were)? How much confidence should we really have in this story?
Not that it’s inconceivable or even unlikely that there would be porn around the bin Laden compound. And not that I have any concrete reason to believe anyone shouldn’t be believed here. But I can’t help wondering if this “Osama the porn hound” story wasn’t bound to have been leaked to press whether it was true in fact or not.
