Catalyst stackables ready for video and security, with less power
Cisco this week extended its Borderless Networks initiative with some new switches and enhancements to existing routers to enable anytime, anywhere access to anything. To facilitate that, Cisco is working on embedding more video, security and mobility features into its gear, while also reducing the amount of energy they consume.
Cisco kicked off its Borderless Networks initiative last fall with the introduction of the ISR G2 branch routers. This week, Cisco included some low-end Catalyst access switches, additional ISRs, and the ASR 1000 edge router.
The price seems very aggressive too. The switches range from $1,995 to $5,200, something that might be aimed at HP, according to Forbes.
But other than that, analysts say HP, the No. 2 Ethernet switching company behind Cisco, shouldn’t be in any rush to try and match or exceed what Cisco’s rolled out. The company has its hands full closing the 3Com deal and then digesting the company; and after rationalizing the product line, HP should just bend to customer demand – not to Cisco.
