Apple sure is keeping busy these days. With the iPad launch just 3 days behind us, Apple yesterday sent out invitations to a number of developers and media outlets for an iPhone OS event to be held on Apple’s campus on Thursday, April 8. While the iPad has been gobbling up all of the buzz lately, Apple’s invitations promise to showcase “the future of the iPhone OS” so things should certainly be interesting.
One of the more substantial rumors regarding iPhone OS 4 is that it will at last include support for third party multitasking. Despite some assertions to the contrary, the iPhone is fully capable of supporting multitasking, it’s just that Apple has only bestowed that ability upon its own apps, such as the iPod music player.
Apple has long shied away from third party multitasking, claiming that doing so would drain the battery as users would inevitably forget about open apps they have running in the background. Apple has even taken pot shots at the task manager apps that are quite common on Android and Windows Mobile devices. That being the case, it’ll be interesting to see how Apple’s implementation of third party multitasking will address some of their previously voiced concerns.
Some other rumored features in the next iPhone OS include new gesture support, along with a new iAd service that will enable developers to seamlessly integrate advertising into their apps all from within the SDK.
