Chitika Research says not so fast on crowning Android king, but acknowledges impressive pace
While the Android hype machine has been cranking on all cylinders, one market watcher says the iPhone isn’t exactly wilting in the face of competition.
According to Chitika Research’s latest numbers, Android phones had a little more than a third as many impressions as iPhones in April. Chitika based its figures on more than 18.5 million impressions across its advertising network in North America.

Not that Android isn’t gaining ground, starting with about 23.5% as much traffic as iPhones in January, according to Chitika.

“While both platforms continue to grow, Apple’s lead is decreasing at a fairly significant rate,”according to Chitika.
At the current growth rate, Android could overtake the iPhone by August, 2011, but that’s assuming there’s no boost from the iPhone 4G, expected by many to be revealed in June at Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference.
AdMob, another online advertising company, also released smartphone numbers recently and found that Apple continues to dominate the worldwide and U.S. mobile handset markets with its iPhone and iPod Touch devices, but makers of Android phones are gaining ground.
Apple’s iPhone and iPod Touch accounted for 37% of worldwide device share in March based on traffic, down from 40% in both January and February, according to AdMob. The share dropped from 43% to 38% in the United States. Meanwhile, Motorola inched up in the U.S. on the strength of its Android-powered Droid smartphone and Nokia showed growth worldwide, based on use of such devices as the N70.
