It would appear a new model number iPhone has passed Wi-Fi certification as of June 3rd, 2010 for single spatial stream 802.11n on 2.4ghz.
Looking through the recent certifications over at the Wi-Fi alliance, it would seem on June 3rd Apple was granted certification for an iPhone by the model of “A1332”. I would guess that this is the new iPhone being released. The iPhone 3GS was certified on May 27th 2009 and was simply called “iPhone 3G S” as the model. The iPhone 3G was called model “A1241” when certified on August 2nd, 2008.
Unfortunately, the certification doesn’t really say what it is certified for, except that it has 1 spatial stream support on 2.4GHz and nothing tested on 5GHz. It lists no other certifications, no protocols. You can view the certification in all of its nearly blank glory via PDF at Wi-Fi.org
If you compare it against the other certifications they have done, it should at least confirm 802.11n support on the new iPhone, with single spatial stream. I think this is expected, as that’s exactly what the iPad has. You’ll get a maximum data rate of 65Mb/sec (MCS7) with a guard interval of 800ns. While some have complained they don’t find this sufficient for a mobile device (Especially complainers about the iPad), I can’t say I personally have any issue with that at all.
The Motorola Droid 2 also achieved certifications (Model A955) for single spatial stream 802.11n on 2.4ghz and short guard support a few weeks ago.
Perhaps also of interested in the last week… Cisco gets an 802.11b/g/n with 2 spatial stream router certified with a model name of NAV20W. There doesn’t appear to be any other evidence online of this product line. Their small business hasn’t used NAV in their model numbering, nor has Linksys.
