Ookla reports speed by ISP/state/city
Like politics, all Internet performance is local. Given this axiom, we bear excellent news for folks interested in tracking last mile ISP performance. For the first time, you can get up-to-date Internet performance statistics by state, by city, and by ISP — as well as by country of course. This data is great for regional, head-to-head, ISP comparisons.
The source of this information trove is Ookla Net Metrics, the company behind the Speedtest.net Internet connection speed testing service. You may have used Speedtest.net to see how well your own ISP connection is performing. Ookla aggregates the millions of daily Speedtest.net results and presents them in an easily digestible and granular form as the Ookla Net Index.
Ookla co-founder Doug Suttles briefed us yesterday about the Net Index. You can get results for download and upload speeds as well as a “Quality Index” compiling results from Ookla’s Pingtest.net service. Suttles told us that the Net Index reporting capabilities were originally developed for the FCC, and after the FCC opted to use SamKnows as its ISP tester, Ookla decided to share its data with the public rather than simply sit on it.
We applaud Ookla for its decision to make the data publically available, and encourage you to check it out. We think Ookla has strong test methodology, and believe it is pushing the envelope for measuring broadband performance. Stay tuned for more news on useful reports from Ookla.
